For my entire life, I have always been obsessed with the literary portrait. I consider it an exercise of the highest order <\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In the preface to <\/span><\/i>Retrats de passaport<\/span>, Josep Pla states that over the course of his life he has written an indeterminate number of biographies, numerous \u201clong portrait\u201d essays \u2013the <\/span><\/i>Homenots<\/span>\u2013 and a vast quantity of brief literary portraits, of which this volume contains more than a hundred. One might say that Pla was driven toward this predilection for biographical books or sketches by a series of motivations, which could include: his curiosity about human nature; his view that literature is nothing more than a struggle against oblivion; and, finally, a certain sense of responsibility toward a country that, traditionally, seems to take pleasure in its own self-destruction: \u201cIn our country, personal literature has been cultivated very little. It is the natural consequence of a people who know neither how to read nor how to write their own language. It is a country that, generally speaking, has contributed to its own oblivion. If we do not know what our grandparents looked like, what their faces were like, what they were truly like, what idea can we possibly have of the country’s past? Everything is forgotten, everything is ruins. […] The great problem of a writer rooted in a country is to contribute to the fight against oblivion.\u201d In these lines by Pla there is a whole literary programme, the justification of a genre and a concern that will be, throughout all his work, one of its guiding threads: the search for lost time as a necessary step towards finding one’s own identity, both his personal identity and the collective identity of the country. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The process of writing <\/span>Josep Pla o la ra\u00f3 narrativa<\/span><\/i>, which began in 1973 and concluded in 1978 with the study’s publication, marked the start of a new phase in Josep M. Castellet\u2019s literary output: the literature of memory, or literature of the self. Initially, he attempted an intimate diary, but the result failed to interest him; it remained merely a stylistic exercise that ended up locked in a drawer, only to be published more than thirty years later under the title <\/span>Dietari de 1973<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>

This quest for a literature of the self remained very much alive; ten years later, during a tribute organized by the Associaci\u00f3 d\u2019Escriptors en Llengua Catalana in December 1983, Castellet read in the Great Hall of the University of Barcelona <\/span>a portrait of Giuseppe Ungaretti<\/span> that would go on to become, without any modification, the first chapter of <\/span>Els escenaris de la mem\u00f2ria.<\/span><\/i> He had found the key: the literary portrait.<\/span> <\/p>

The formula of <\/span>Els escenaris de la mem\u00f2ria<\/span><\/i> centres on constructing literary portraits\u2014partial and always set in a scene shared with the narrator\u2014of a series of figures (all of them writers), who end up leaving behind the pieces that form what might be described as an oblique self-portrait. The narrator, a first-person \u201cI\u201d who does not hide his name, Josep M. Castellet, is always defined and explained through, or in relation to, others. Whether receding into the background or actively intervening in the scene, the narrator asks questions and plans the conversations he holds with the others; conversations that, always in his own interest, lead him to learn, to understand, and to discover in others what he himself wishes to express. In other words, he makes them speak, observes them and transcribes them, as well as himself, to the point that the characters serve as a model, as a mirror. <\/span><\/p>

The protagonists of the <\/span>Escenaris<\/span><\/i> \u2013Giuseppe Ungaretti, Merc\u00e8 Rodoreda, Rafael Alberti, Josep Pla, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Octavio Paz, Jos\u00e9 Luis Aranguren, Mary McCarthy and Pere Gimferrer\u2013 belonged, with the exception of Gimferrer, to the sphere of the masters who had shaped him, who were by no means his closest writer friends. In the prologue to the<\/span> Escenaris<\/span><\/i> he had already hinted at a possible second volume featuring more intimate figures: \u201cWho knows if, one day, certain friendlier figures might appear and knock at the door of my memory, asserting their justified right to complete the personal imagery I have projected onto the past, a blend of sensations and experiences, friends and acquaintances, anecdotes and lived moments, frustrations and those few instances of serene fulfilment I have managed to attain.\u201d Little by little, these friends came knocking at the door. And gradually, and not without struggle, Castellet wrote a series of portraits that were published in<\/span> Seductors, il\u00b7lustrats i visionaris<\/span><\/i> (2009), featuring Manuel Sacrist\u00e1n, Carlos Barral, Gabriel Ferrater, Joan Fuster, Alfons Com\u00edn and Terenci Moix, and <\/span>Tres escriptors amics<\/span><\/i> (2012), featuring Salvador Espriu, Baltasar Porcel and Montserrat Roig.<\/span> <\/p>

At the time of his death in January 2014, Castellet was working on a new volume of literary portraits: those of his prot\u00e9g\u00e9s from the <\/span>Seminario Bosc\u00e1n<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
